Section A · Large Numbers · Stage 1
A digit and its value are different
What are we learning?
The digit 6 is a symbol; its value depends on the column where it sits. In 6,204,070, the leftmost 6 represents six millions.
Why the mathematics works
One column left is ten times as valuable. We therefore need to name a digit’s position before saying how much it represents.
6,204,070 — read the labelled columns
6 × 1,000,000 = 6,000,000. The digit is 6, but its value is 6,000,000.
This is a read-only illustration of the actual lesson model.
Amara demonstrates the method
- 1Read 6,204,070 in the chart from millions to ones.
Watch out — common SATs mistake
Do not confuse the digit with its value: 6 is the digit, 6,000,000 is its value.
